What is Bently Nevada Orbit 60 series monitoring system?

Spread the love

The Orbit 60 Series is regarded as the future of asset protection, condition monitoring, and sophisticated diagnostics for machines. Beyond protection, the Orbit 60 Series is the next generation of machinery protection and condition monitoring, designed to be the most advanced system for all of your key machinery assets, as well as plant-wide assets, across a wide range of industrial applications.

The Orbit 60 Series is constructed on a completely distributable architecture, allowing you to monitor all of your assets regardless of complexity or location, and it is innately cyber safe.

When used in conjunction with System 1 condition monitoring and diagnostics software, the Orbit 60 Series allows customers to design proactive maintenance and fleet management plans for optimal productivity and cost savings.

Requirements prior Orbit 60

  • A cybersecure technology that protects machinery while also monitoring its condition. A system that met the needs of not just equipment engineers, but also the OT and IT realms where data must be moved.
  • A reduction in installation expenses by allowing for greater flexibility in the location of the system and the number of wires that needed to be pulled.
  • A simpler and less expensive method of integrating process data into the machinery monitoring environment while giving machinery data to the process control and monitoring ecosystem.

New Features – Orbit 60

Cybersecurity

Bently Nevada has incorporated cybersecurity into every Orbit 60 platform, citing it as the #1 emphasis area for implementing new technology and a top priority for the great majority of our industry’s clients. The Orbit 60 system is designed to meet IEC 62443-4-2 Security Level (SL) 4 requirements, a widely recognized Cyber Security standard. With the separation of protection and condition monitoring networks built into each Orbit 60, an unauthorized user cannot breach a condition monitoring network and negatively effect the protection configuration.

Plant-wide and adaptable deployments

The Orbit 60 platform combines the best features of the whole Bently Nevada portfolio, allowing the system to be installed on nearly any machine or application. Because of the platform’s modular design, the configuration can be tailored to only protection and/or condition monitoring applications at a reasonable cost.

Large machine trains or clusters of plant-wide assets are no problem, and with the capacity to bring in any number of speed and Keyphasor signals, the possibilities for Orbit 60 deployment are limitless. Orbit 60 is designed for journal and rolling element bearing (REB) applications, ranging from high-speed critical turbomachinery to plant-wide assets such as pumps, motors, and fan applications.

Integration of process data

During the extensive research and discovery process with clients around the world, a significant message was the need to correlate data from all areas of a process into a single picture. Our teams used these operational insights to simplify process data integration and make this elegant solution a key design feature of Orbit 60.

Bi-directional communication has been improved with the recovery of high-speed process data from a DCS, Control System, or connected device using the redesigned design of the Communication Gateway (CGW) module in Orbit 60. This enables Orbit 60 to perform hardware-level state-based data filtering while also providing a secure connection to feed process data into System 1, enabling Bently Nevada Diagnostic HMI capability.

Remote I/O and distributed architecture

The Orbit 60 employs a novel architecture to connect numerous bases to create a system that may be disseminated in a daisy chain or star configuration. To ensure full system operation across the distributed architecture, the bridge design replicates all data from one bridged base to the other while retaining data resolution. Whether you want to cut field wire expenses by installing Orbit 60 I/Os close to the machine or connect many assets together in a control room setting with shared processing and protection components, the design allows complete flexibility. Field wiring distance limits are no longer an issue with Orbit 60.

Platform for innovation

Orbit 60 is matched with new applications such as Torsional Vibration and Combustion Monitoring since it has over 100x the processing power of the industry’s leading standard today. With up to 80 dynamic vibrations and 100 static inputs (such as temperature) and DCS integration into a single system deployment, Orbit 60 has the largest channel density of any system on the market. Versatile I/O options enable a cost-effective and straightforward interface to a wide range of sensors and applications, reducing spare parts inventory. Orbit 60 provides not only features but also value by lowering the entire cost of deploying and maintaining protection and condition monitoring systems today and in the future.

System 1 deployment flexibility

Innovative and secure condition monitoring data connection via the condition monitoring module (CMM), combined with features such as advanced signal processing, in-system data sampling, and on-device data storage, enable flexible deployments that truly unlock the power and flexibility of the Bently Nevada monitoring solution.

Traditional System 1 and Orbit 60 deployments using various network topologies will continue to be supported, but the system will also allow for other installations such as hosted System 1 installations with no on-site IT infrastructure, installations with intermittent or poor data connections, remote connectivity via cellular or WAN data connections, and cost-effective single machine monitoring.
